MUSCLE PULL (Strain)

Pulling (straining) a muscle is due to overstretching or tearing a muscle (or some of its fibers) or its tendon.

Immediate Attention

1. Apply ice or a cold pack as soon as possible.

2. Wrap the muscle with an elastic bandage to control swelling.

3. Elevate the injured region.

4. Take two acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain; (see Pain Control).

5. Pain is a signal to stop athletic activity.

Consult a physician IF...

•  there is near or complete loss of function in the injured region.

•  pain and/or swelling continue for more than one week.
