SPRAIN

Sprain is caused by the overstretching or tearing of a ligament, which can cause pain, instability of a joint, or dislocation (misalignment of bones in a joint).

Immediate Attention

1. Apply ice or a cold pack as soon as possible and continue cold treatment four times a day for 10-25 minutes each time during the first 24-72 hours

2. Rest and wrap the injury with an elastic bandage to control swelling and soreness.

3. Elevate the injured region.

4. Avoid weight-bearing in the injured region until pain diminishes and normal range of motion returns.

5. Take acetaminophen or ibuprofen to reduce pain (see Pain Control)

6. Pain and joint instabiity are signals to stop athletic activity.

Consult a physician IF...

•  there is near or complete loss of function in the injured region.

•  the injury causes any anatomical deformities.

•  pain and/or swelling persist for more than two days.

•  there is significant swelling around the injury.

•  the injured athlete is a child or adolescent.
