BRUISE (Contusion)

Damage to muscle tissue and blood vessels from a compression.

Immediate Attention

1. R.I.C.E. (rest, ice, compression, elevation).

2. Pain relief = acetaminophen ("Tylenol").

3. Ice often during first 24 hours, less often 24-48 hrs. after.

4. Rest injured region until swelling and soreness subside.

5. Do not massage injury.

Consult a Physician IF...

•  there is complete loss of function in the region.

•  pain/swelling persist for more than one week.

•  an underlying bone may be injured.
