FROSTBITE

Frostbite is frozen body tissue with ice crystals in body fluids. The skin is white or grayish-yellow. It can be painful at first but pain diminishes as tissues freeze.

Immediate Attention

1. Rewarm by immersing in warm (105-110 F) degree water, wrapping in warm blankets, or providing skin-to-skin contact with a warm person.

2. Do not rewarm frostbitten region if further exposure to cold and refreezing are likely.

3. Do no rub or massage the affected region.

4. Separate frostbitten fingers and toes with sterile gauze pads. Fingers can be exercised but no walking on frostbitten feet.

Consult a physician immediately.
