Academic Honesty and Fairness

When U.S. Presidents lie and famous athletes, businesspeople, and entrusted leaders cheat, it may seem OK for everyone else in society to lie and cheat in order to get what they want. But we all know that's wrong. Lying and cheating harm others and ourselves.

In Health 1, you are expected to develop learning, thinking, and self-care skills, which require taking an active role in your own learning. Any type of dishonesty hinders your academic progress and ultimately harms yourself.

Whereas in this course you are encouraged to work on assignments cooperatively with other students it is wrong to...

1. copy another student's assignment. You may collaboratively prepare for an assignment, but written responses should be in your own words. (First occurrence penalty = no credit for the assignment; Second occurrence penalty = drop from the course).

2. allow others to do one's assignment or a portion of one's assignment or use a commercial term paper service (First occurrence penalty = no credit for the assignment; Second occurrence penalty = drop from the course).

3. submit an assignment previously written by a former student in Health 1. (First occurrence penalty = no credit for the assignment; Second occurrence penalty = drop from the course).

4. use the exact wording of a source without putting that wording in quotation marks and acknowledging the author and other appropriate information about the original source (Penalty = rewrite the assignment).

5. paraphrase the wording of a source or summarize the ideas of a source without acknowledging the author and other appropriate information about the original source. (Penalty = rewrite the assignment).
